Hello Sunshine! How is February going so far? Here in São Paulo the birds are singing, people are preparing to groove the Carnival season, the sun is shinning and the weather is warm. I mean reeeaaaaly warm! Last week I spoke to a few friends in Europe and they mentioned how cold it is there. Boy, I’m glad this year I can exchange that icy wind for tropical sunbeams 🙂
Now, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Papayas! I love papayas and I consider them to be super wonderful fruits. This is why this week I have decided to show you how to easily cut and eat a giant formosa papaya and share with you some of its amazing health benefits. So get ready for the sweetness and come on over to the kitchen – there is a tropical, juicy and giant formosa papaya waiting for you!
So, in case you don’t know, a formosa papaya is the biggest in its variety, weighting around 1700 grams and measuring a stunning average of 28 centimetres. Formosa papayas can be found in Brazil, Mexico and other tropical countries. But if you don’t live in a tropical area, formosa papaya and regular papaya can also be found inside Asian markets and in most Farmer’s market in Europe – and they are usually Non-GMO.
How to Pick, Cut and Eat Your Papaya
I choose my papayas based on their yellowish skin colour and their beautiful sweet scent. And here’s how to cut papaya. In order to cut it in half I’ll use a long chef’s knife. Even though it is very large and long, cutting the formosa papaya in half is very easy because of its smoothness. I’ll also remove the seeds with the help of a spoon in a circular fashion, but you can always save around one or two spoons of papaya seeds and blend them in your smoothie in order to help your body remove parasites. Now, all I have left to do is grab a spoon and enjoy this wonderful ready to eat formosa papaya.
4 Health Benefits of Papaya
1. Papayas are rich in Vitamin C, which contributes for healthy bones, muscles, and also works in preventing the ageing process.
2. Papayas are super rich in beta-carotene which is associated with Vitamin A, great to keep your skin healthy. Together with this, beta-carotene can also protect your skin from the sun. Therefore, a papaya fruit can also be considered a natural non-chemical sun protector. But hey, don’t be silly and always remember not to exaggerate your exposure to the sun, especially during the peak hours of summer days, even if you have eaten papayas or fruits rich in beta-carotene.
3. Papayas also have lycopene which is a powerful anti-oxidant that reduces the chances of cancer and heart disease.
4. If you love going to the gym to work out and build muscles, papayas also are loaded with potassium, a great mineral that promotes healthy muscles, perfect for vegan muscle building.
Have you fell in love with papayas already? They are truly full of health benefits and they also taste delicious! If you have access to papayas or formosa papayas in your area, please go ahead and try it out! It is soooo worth it 🙂
